It is very good news for many industrial companies in Germany and Europe: On January 1, 2024, customs duties will be abolished in Switzerland on a large number of industrial products. However, this change in the export business will not only have important advantages for the manufacturing industry, but also for logistics companies. We list the three most important ones.
Number 1: Less bureaucracy
Industrial exports from Germany to Switzerland currently involve a great deal of effort if you want to save on customs duties in Switzerland. This is because in order to claim this benefit, a customs document called EUR.1 is required for goods worth more than 6,000 EUR, which is a threshold many companies effortlessly cross.
"The driver must then also have this EUR.1 with him in the original when entering Switzerland. This obligation will soon no longer exist due to the abolition of customs duties," explains Matthias Exner, who is responsible for customs matters at NOSTA. For logistics companies and their customers, this means significantly less bureaucracy in the future.
Number 2: Faster and more flexible transports
Above all, the elimination of customs duties ensures greater flexibility, which benefits both exporters and target customers in Switzerland. Shipments to Switzerland can now be dispatched much more quickly and lengthy customs checks at the borders are no longer necessary. The result is a new time advantage that benefits everyone involved
Number 3: Decreasing costs
Every additional effort is an additional cost factor for producers, logistics providers and end customers. This will come to an end as of January 1, 2024. "The elimination of bureaucracy and the increase in the transport tempo will lower individual costs for all parties involved," Exner is certain. This is also the declared goal of Switzerland, which wants to use the measure to strengthen the domestic economy, relieve consumers and reduce the administrative burden.
