"The strong transatlantic trade relations play an important role in our internationalization. In addition, we recognize a convergence of service requirements between North America and us - both regions have a certain demand for quality. They demand the complete package, including excellent customer service, and we can provide it," says Nicolas Gallenkamp, CEO of NOSTA Holding GmbH. Having already successfully expanded to Poland and the Netherlands, NOSTA's strategic choice fell on the USA, where it established itself in 2018, in the Chicago area, near O'Hare Airport, including its own bonded (customs) warehouse. The team of nine, headed by General Manager North America Florian Knoll since September 2022, has the necessary market knowledge of the products and the USA itself.
After a short planning phase, the first own NOSTA consolidation container was packed and shipped to the USA. Since then, one to two 40-foot highcube containers with consolidated cargo from all over Europe are shipped on a weekly schedule from Hamburg to Chicago for the distribution across the US Midwest. NOSTA has since underlined the quality of its offer with a service guarantee regarding transit time and a potential refund of sea freight costs if the guarantee cannot be upheld. NOSTA's consolidated container service is geared towards small and medium-sized companies that export to the US.
The Osnabrück-based logistics provider avoids obstacles such as strict American customs law and time delays on the US side by precise planning and utilizing its own Inhouse Licensed Customs broker, warehouse staff and reliable local partners. This ensures control and transparency along the entire route. Earlier this year, NOSTA launched it’s own airfreight product, offering customers consolidated services twice per week with the Lufthansa 777 freighter and other direct flights from Frankfurt to Chicago, thus completing the service portfolio of groupage shipments in export.
With its own Customs Broker license in the US, NOSTA is able to handle customs formalities on its own, which saves time planning effort and supports customers remaining in compliance with US import regulations. International shipments usually have to clear customs before they are released for onward transport. NOSTA has authorization to temporarily store all goods in its own bonded warehouse facility until final customs clearance. "This allows us to store the goods in Chicago for up to a month, which provides our customers more flexibility and control," Knoll explains. NOSTA also has this capability at its Hamburg location, where it operates its own bonded warehouse as well, allowing the logistics provider to pre-clear customs goods throughout Europe that are exported from there.
"Our service is tailored towards customers who value service the most in terms of plannability, quality, reliability and accessibility." Knoll confirms that NOSTA will offer the groupage service on additional Atlantic-focused routes in the future. The company's network will be expanded with international partners as well as additional branches of its own in the US.
As a result, another groupage air freight service to Mexico has already been set up with a locally strong partner in March 2023. In April, air freight imports from the US Midwest to Amsterdam and Frankfurt as well as own ocean freight LCL services from the Chicago warehouse via Rotterdam were also integrated into the NOSTA Group's portfolio.
